Re: Weekly Update
May 24, 2023
FIRST WORDS …
Bob Jordan, Sr. Pastor

Are you a summer prepper? If so, are you good to go for the summer of 2023? Prepping for summer includes different things for different people. While for some it means simply donning the sunglasses and plopping themselves down in a lawn chair, for others of us, it involves binging out the floppy hat and picking up some spf 70. There can be bigger chores too, like repainting the deck or planning a vacation.

One thing we can all do as we look to the coming three months; we can put together a plan to grow spiritually. The longer days, the different pace often associated with summer, and the changes to plans that come along with warmer weather, opens for us the opportunity to set some spiritual priorities and goals for the summer.

Here are four basic areas you might consider: Worship, Discipleship, Fellowship, and Mission. How might God have you stretch or grow in one or more of these areas? What commitments are you willing to make? Who can you partner with so that you end up sharing the experience with someone else?

IDEAS FOR SPIRITUAL STRETCHING THIS SUMMER

The following list is intended to spark even more ideas that better fit your situation.

Worship

  • Commit to joining in worship every week, even if it includes participating online.
  • Create a worship playlist and use it in the car to sing out your praises to God daily, weekly, or on that big car trip.
  • If traveling, attend a church on Sundays wherever you happen to be.
  • Work your way through the book of Psalms, using them in your own prayer life as a means of worshipping God.
  • Declare every morning that the day belongs to God and that you’re going to live for him throughout the whole of the day.
  • Google “top 25 praise songs” and commit to learning them over the summer.

Discipleship

  • Read Genesis and Matthew.
  • Write out the story of when you became a Christian and the difference it has made in your life.
  • Share the story of what God has been doing in your life with at least three people. Ask them what God has been doing in their lives.
  • Read Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s The Cost of Discipleship.
  • Make a list of your top five questions about the Christian faith, and ask a Christian friend you trust to help you work through them.
  • Read the Gospel of John, picturing yourself as one of the disciples and looking to Jesus as your teacher.

Fellowship

  • Invite a few folks from your own church to share together in a summer barbeque.
  • Invite a few friends who attend different churches to share together in a summer barbeque.
  • Arrive early and plan to stay late on a Sunday at church at least one Sunday each month for the purpose of interacting with others.
  • Arrange with someone at church to join with you for brunch when church is over.
  • Set up a text group with a few Christian friends across the country and use the platform to share with each other what God is doing in your lives each week.
  • Arrange to meet with another Christian each week for an early morning walk and coffee.

Mission

  • Volunteer at a food bank.
  • Use the summer to get to know the people on your block so that you can better care for them and serve them as needs arise.
  • Pray daily for missionaries around the world, especially those who risk their lives daily to follow Christ.
  • Read a book like Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret by Frederick Howard Taylor or Through Gates of Splendor by Elisabeth Elliot.
  • Take a tour of the Dream Center.
  • Read the Gospel of Luke, looking specifically what Jesus says to and about those who are disenfranchised and living on the margins.
  • Invite a non-church-goer from work to come with you to church one week and then to go get lunch together.
  • Adopt a child through Compassion International (www.compassion.com).

AN UPDATE FROM BUILDING AND GROUNDS

You’re going to see some work taking place at the church in the coming months.

  • The first project will be the repair and sealing of the rubber flat roofs.  These roofs have reached the age that caulking the cracks and doing minor fixes just isn’t enough.  We are having Energy Resource Roofing seal the roofs with a silicone sealer.  Besides stopping leaks, this sealer will also help us reduce our energy consumption through the summer months by keeping these areas cooler than a normal urethane or oil base sealer.
  • Secondly, we will be having RH Remelius Concrete replace the stairs to the Trinity wing.  This will include making the steps more uniform in size and each step deeper to increase the safety of the steps.
  • And lastly, we have contracted with Bob Lundholm and the crew at Lakeside Builders to replace siding, soffits, and fascia on the garage.  They will also move the entry door to the other side of the garage, making the door visible to our security cameras.

Please contact me with any questions about these projects.

THANK YOU FROM THE FAMILY OF MILLIE FRANK
To the congregation - we just wanted to reach out to thank everyone who sent Millie Frank 100th birthday cards. She was so happy to receive them. As Sandy read each beautiful card to her, she had a big smile on her face. She recalled doing the same thing for others. Nice to get a card from people who care. So much appreciation from her family.

God Bless -

THANK YOU FROM THE RECIPIENTS OF RECENT FOOD DONATIONS

Northminster Church - Thank you all so much for you generous donations to Prospect United Methodist food pantry! The day you dropped off we had over 7 families shop and pack their bags with so much of your food. I heard from multiple shoppers how truly grateful they were. One even told me she was looking forward to not waking up hungry the next morning. You all made a big difference and we are so thankful to receive your donations! Thank you!

Prospect United Methodist Food Pantry

Dear Church Members,

Blessings in Jesus' name! Thank you for your donation of non-perishables to the Love-In-Action food pantry! We appreciate your generosity. We are seeing our numbers rise this year, but we have had many generous donations to keep the pantry stocked, Praise God! Please continue to pray for our pantry and for our clients as we remain proactive against rising food prices and the hunger epidemic. May the Lord bless you now and in the future!

A FORMATION JOURNEY
Bob Jordan, Sr. Pastor

This is a serial article. For background, please see the introduction following this week’s entry.

A Faith Journey of Peace Entry #18 – I had one of those weeks where the subject of peace and growing in faith came up more than usual. Each time, I had the opportunity to share what God had been working in me and what I’ve been learning. I’m not sure the difference it made in others, but the conversations helped to focus my thoughts and to allow me to recognize some of the work that God has accomplished.

Whatever spiritual growth God is working in you currently, consider sharing it with a few other folks. With humility, share what God has accomplished and the changes and growth you’ve seen occur. Take time afterword to praise God for how he is growing and stretching you spiritually.

Introduction:   At the beginning of 2023, I embarked on a faith formation journey. We use the term “faith formation” in our congregation to better identify what had historically been referred to as “church education.” The old nomenclature emphasized sharing information as a way to grow intellectual understanding. The term “faith formation,” however, opens us to a more wholistic learning and transformational process. Growing in Christ is not a journey simply of increasing our knowledge but one of exploration, challenge, listening, surrender, renewal, application, and most importantly being formed into the image of Christ. This latter work—in fact all of the work of formation—is a work of God.

I am trying something new as part of my contributions to the faith formation of our congregation. I am inviting you to come along as God works in me this year to form in me a greater dependency upon, engagement with, trust in, celebration of the peace that is mine in Christ. I feel the need to provide a couple of disclaimers: (1) My journey is not THE journey of formation. I will be an example as much for my shortcomings as for anything else. (2) I am committed to practicing appropriate boundaries. Most assuredly there will be opportunities this year for confession and for uprooting and discarding unhealthy patterns. I have some accountability partners that I will turn to throughout the year, and as appropriate I’ll acknowledge to you that I’ve done so. (3) In sharing this faith formation journey with you, my hope is that it spurs on your own faith formation journey in 2023. Maybe you have found our use of the term a little confusing in the past. Hopefully, my little journey of stumbling and growing will provide a (not THE) picture of what a faith formation journey might look like. I encourage you to identify what God might be working in your life this year and then to keep your own journal of your faith formation journey. (4) Get ready to get bored. While I would like transformation to be one watershed moment after another, in truth it can be, as others have described, a long obedience in the same direction. Or in other words, boring—especially to observers.

We’ll post this article at the bottom of the Weekly Update so that it doesn’t clutter up all the other articles. We’ll also provide this introduction at the end of my weekly entry so that people who happen upon it later in the year will grasp the context.
